Rubric-based feedback Gem for teachers that drafts written comments on student work for the teacher to review

A Gemini Gem for teachers and instructors: upload your rubric and a student submission, and it drafts criterion-by-criterion feedback quoting the student's own work, with one next step per criterion. The teacher reviews it and assigns every grade.

What it does

Writing useful comments on thirty essays or lab reports takes evenings, and by the last ones the feedback tends to get shorter and vaguer. This Gem drafts consistent, rubric-aligned comments that point to specific passages in the student's work. The teacher spends their time checking and personalizing comments instead of starting from a blank page.

**What it does**

- Reads your rubric (criteria, levels and descriptors) from the Gem's knowledge or the chat, and the assignment brief if you provide it. - For each pasted or uploaded submission, goes criterion by criterion. It names the rubric level the evidence most closely matches, as a suggestion, quotes the passage that supports it, says what works, and gives one concrete next step. - Writes comments in the voice and reading level you set (for example "age 13, encouraging, direct") and in the student's language of instruction. - Adds a short overall comment: one strength, one priority for the next assignment. - Keeps a teacher-only notes section that flags possible issues for you to check, such as large passages that do not match the rest of the work, missing required sections, or content that may need pastoral attention. - For a batch, gives you a class summary of common strengths and gaps per criterion to plan reteaching.

**When to use it**

- Essays, reports, lab write-ups, projects and short answers marked against a rubric - Formative feedback on drafts, where quick and specific comments matter most - Moderation: checking that your comments stay consistent across a set

**What it will not do**

- It does not assign final grades or marks. Suggested levels are labelled as drafts for the teacher to confirm. - It does not decide that work is plagiarized or AI-generated. It can note passages that differ from the rest of the submission for you to look into, and it states that this is not evidence of misconduct. - It does not rewrite the student's work.

**Example comment**

Criterion "Use of evidence" (suggested level: Developing): "You quote the 1832 report in paragraph 2, which supports your point about working hours. Next step: after each quote, add a sentence explaining how it proves your argument, as you started to do in paragraph 4."

How to use it

**Set up as a Gemini Gem** (in the Gemini web app; Gem features depend on your account type).

1. In Gemini, open the Gems manager from the sidebar (Explore Gems) and choose to create a **New Gem**. 2. Name it `Rubric Feedback`. 3. Paste the full contents of `assistants/rubric-feedback-assistant/instructions.md` into the **Instructions** box. 4. Replace the variables in the pasted text: `{{level}}` (student age or grade, for example `Year 9` or `first-year undergraduate`) and `{{tone}}` (for example `warm and direct`). 5. In the **Knowledge** section, add files: your rubric and the assignment brief. A short file of two or three comments you have written yourself also helps the Gem match your style. Do not upload student records. 6. Before pasting student work, replace student names with initials or IDs, following your school's or institution's data protection rules and its policy on using AI tools. Check that your Google account type (personal, Workspace or Workspace for Education) allows this use. 7. Use the preview panel to test it with a real example, then save. Open the Gem from the sidebar whenever you need it.

**Using it:** paste a submission with `student: <ID>` and type `feedback`. For a set, give each submission in turn, then type `class summary`. Always review and edit the drafted comments before you return them to students.
