Prompts

Practice quiz generator from your own study material, with explained answers

Creates a practice quiz from notes, a chapter or slides you paste in: mixed question types at the difficulty you choose, an answer key with explanations tied to the source, and why each wrong option is wrong.

What it does

Retrieval practice (testing yourself) is one of the most dependable ways to remember material, but writing good questions takes time. This prompt writes a quiz from the material you provide, so the questions match what you are actually studying rather than the model's general knowledge of the subject.

**Use it when** you are a student revising for an exam, a teacher or trainer creating a check-for-understanding, or a professional preparing for a certification using your own notes.

**What you get** - A quiz with the number of questions and mix of types you choose: multiple choice, true/false with justification, short answer, and applied scenario questions. - Questions spread across the material, labelled by topic, at the difficulty you choose (recall, understanding, application, or mixed). - Multiple-choice distractors based on common misconceptions, not obviously wrong options. - A separate answer key: correct answer, a short explanation, the part of the source it comes from, and why each wrong option is wrong. - An optional self-marking guide for short-answer questions, listing the points a good answer includes.

**What it will not do** - It will not ask about content that is not in your material. If the material is thin, it writes fewer questions and says so. - It will not reproduce questions from real exams or copyrighted question banks. - It will not give answers inline. The key comes after all the questions so you can attempt them first. If you prefer, ask it to hold the key until you send your answers, and it will then mark them.

**Tip:** run it again on the same material and ask for "only questions on topics I got wrong last time" to focus your revision.

How to use it

## How to use

1. Open `prompts/practice-quiz-generator.md` and copy everything below the title line. 2. Replace each `{{variable}}` with your own content. Paste long material (notes, transcripts, tables) directly in place of the variable; keep the surrounding tags so the model can tell inputs apart. 3. Start a new chat in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and paste the filled prompt as your first message. 4. Read the output against the quality checks at the end of the prompt before you use or send it.

## Variables

- `{{source_material}}`: the notes, chapter text or slide text to quiz on. - `{{num_questions}}`: e.g. `10`. - `{{question_types}}`: e.g. `mixed`, `multiple choice only`, `short answer and scenarios`. - `{{difficulty}}`: `recall`, `understanding`, `application` or `mixed`. - `{{learner_level}}`: e.g. `high school biology`, `CPA exam candidate`, `new support hires`. - `{{answer_mode}}`: `key at end` or `hold key until I answer`.

If you do not have a value for an optional variable, write `none` rather than deleting it, so the prompt still reads correctly.

## Reusing it

To reuse it often, save the prompt (with the variables left in) as the instructions of a Claude Project, a custom GPT or a Gemini Gem, then paste only the inputs in each new chat.
